Shayne Mason Celebrates 5 Years at Mustang Freightways

When Shayne Mason joined Mustang Freightways five years ago, he sought stability and a chance to grow. Today, as the Assistant Terminal Manager in Edmonton, he’s become an integral part of the team, known for his dedication, adaptability, and commitment to helping others succeed. From managing the bustling operations of a new terminal to overcoming the challenges of major disruptions, Shayne has truly made his mark.

From the Oilfields to a New Path

Before joining Mustang, Shayne worked in the oilfields and managed golf courses, two different roles that prepared him for handling unexpected challenges. “I was looking for something more stable than oilfield and seasonal work,” Shayne recalls. “Mustang felt like a good fit,” he recalls. “They were growing, and I wanted to be part of that,” he continues. Starting as an Operations and Maintenance Coordinator, Shayne soon took on more day-to-day responsibilities. “It’s been quite the journey,” he shares. “I’ve been able to grow personally and professionally, moving from fleet management to a more active role in operations,” he adds. Through it all, Shayne has remained dedicated to building a robust and supportive team culture.

Navigating Change in the Edmonton Terminal

A major milestone in Shayne’s career was moving into Mustang’s new Edmonton terminal in early 2020. “It was a big shift,” he says. “We went from a smaller space to our own building, which meant setting up new procedures and adapting to a different workflow.” Shayne embraced the challenge, helping streamline operations and foster a more robust team dynamic. He also played a vital role during the 2021 Coquihalla Highway closure, managing freight reroutes and capacity bottlenecks that tested the team’s resilience.

Not only is Shayne a hockey coach for kids, but he’s also a big Oilers fan.

Coaching on and off the Clock

Outside of work, Shayne’s passion for coaching hockey keeps him busy. “I enjoy helping the kids learn and improve, both on and off the ice,” he shares. Shayne sees many connections between coaching and his role at Mustang, where clear communication, patience, and personal development are key. “I’ve found that lessons from work often help on the rink, and the same goes the other way,” he laughs. “Seeing the kids become better players and more confident individuals makes it all worthwhile,” he concludes.

Building a Stronger Team

Shayne’s key focus at Mustang has always been creating a cohesive team. “Success comes from working together and helping each other out,” he says. He believes a positive team dynamic starts with strong relationships, open dialogue, and mutual respect. Whether managing policies or tackling unexpected challenges, Shayne remains dedicated to leading by example and being approachable. He emphasizes that every day is a learning opportunity for him and his team. When the team grows more potent, everyone benefits.

Thank you for five years of hard work, growth, and commitment, Shayne. Cheers to many more!
